I think that these two kits really do that. This is what I like to see in female models, the same things that I look for in male, monstrous or robotic models, figures that represent what the character is. The Handmaiden of the Everqueen shows a bit more flesh, but wow, she looks like she means serious business. They’re slender rather than dangerously buxom and they’re clad like, well, warriors. In these two kits Games Workshop have given us female warriors who are exactly that. I really, really like these models, not just because of what they are, but also because of what they represent. However, upon looking again at some of the pictures I spied two units that really interested me model-wise: The Sisters of Avelorn and the Handmaiden of the Everqueen. I have to admit that High Elves by themselves don’t really interest me and my first instinct upon opening White Dwarf was to giggle at the names of the two phoenix models, who sound as if they were named by teenage girls (there’s a strong teenage girl vein running through a lot of the new High Elf releases to be honest- it’s kind of sweet). However, today I’m feeling all positive about female models, thanks to the new High Elves. HandmaidensĮach Everqueen is attended upon and guarded by the Handmaidens of the Everqueen, also known as the Maiden Guard. You’ve possibly heard me moan about female models before, it’s something that I find vaguely curious, both from a personal point of view, I’d like to build an all or majority female army some time in the future, and a more general point of view, regarding the portrayal of the female figure versus that of the male one (and the whole big boobies thing). The Queen and the king have in the past disagreed on policy, forming powerful factions. Those who would be her consorts are often tasked with hunting down the creatures that inhabit the darker parts of her realm such as Giant Spiders. This maintains the matriarchal line, stretching back to when Ulthuan was ruled only by the Everqueens, before the Coming of Chaos. The Everqueen holds a ritual year-long marriage to the Phoenix King and their first born daughter, the Everchild, will inherit her position. The court of the Everqueen lies deep in the forests of Avelorn although she is ritually crowned at the Shrine of the Earth mother on the Isle of Rebirth to the north of the Isle of the Dead in the Inner Sea. She and the Phoenix King are the rulers of Ulthuan. Unlike the Phoenix King, the Everqueen is always the Queen of Avelorn and the current Everqueen is Alarielle. The Everqueen is one of the two joint rulers of the High Elves, seen by them as the symbol and incarnation of their mother-goddes Isha.
